HIPAA, CMMC, NIST, PCI DSS or SOC 2: when a regulator, an auditor, an insurer or a large customer asks for proof, you need more than a policy binder. NVITS helps Reno and Northern Nevada businesses find their compliance gaps, fix the technical controls and keep the evidence ready, so audits and security questionnaires stop being a scramble.
We’re a local managed IT and cybersecurity team, so the people who assess your environment are the same people who fix it and keep it compliant.

Most businesses don’t need every framework. Start with this table.
| If your business… | You likely need | Who checks it |
|---|---|---|
| Handles patient health information (medical, dental, therapy, billing, or a vendor to these) | HIPAA | HHS Office for Civil Rights, during investigations |
| Accepts credit or debit cards | PCI DSS | Your bank or payment processor; larger merchants need a QSA |
| Sells software or services to companies that ask for a SOC 2 report | SOC 2 | An independent CPA firm |
| Is a defense contractor or subcontractor handling FCI or CUI | CMMC and NIST SP 800-171 | Self-assessment today; third-party assessment later |
| Wants a proven structure for its security program, or is asked “do you follow NIST?” by insurers or customers | NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 | Voluntary; you measure yourself against it |
Not sure? We’ll help you figure out which ones apply during a consultation.
We help covered entities and business associates meet the HIPAA Security Rule. That includes the security risk analysis, access controls, encryption, audit logs, backups and the documentation behind them. We support medical clinics, dental practices, behavioral health providers and the vendors that work with them.
HIPAA has no official certification, and HHS doesn’t endorse private certifications. What matters is a current risk analysis and proof that your safeguards work. See our full HIPAA compliance IT services page.
If you store, process or transmit card data, PCI DSS applies. Nevada law also requires data collectors that accept payment cards to comply with PCI DSS (NRS 603A.215). We help you shrink the systems that touch card data, separate payment networks, secure Wi-Fi and point-of-sale devices, run vulnerability scans and prepare your self-assessment questionnaire (SAQ). The newer PCI DSS v4.0 requirements, including broader MFA, became mandatory on March 31, 2025.
Customers and partners ask for a SOC 2 report when they want proof that you protect their data. We prepare you for the audit: scoping the Trust Services Criteria, putting controls in place, writing policies and collecting evidence, so your CPA firm finds a ready environment. Learn more about our SOC 2 compliance consulting or read our guide to SOC 2 Type I vs. Type II.
The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) protects Federal Contract Information (FCI) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) across the defense supply chain. Northern Nevada manufacturers, machine shops, aerospace suppliers and service companies that subcontract to defense primes can be affected.
Where CMMC stands today: On July 13, 2026, the Department of War suspended CMMC Phase II, which was scheduled to begin November 10, 2026. Phase I self-assessment requirements are still in place, and DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171 still apply. No new Phase II date has been announced. In other words, the third-party audit is on hold, but the security work isn’t.
We help with:
NVITS is not a C3PAO and doesn’t issue CMMC certifications. We prepare you for the assessment and keep your controls running.
NIST gives you a proven structure for a security program, even if no regulation requires one. NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0, released in February 2024, is built for organizations of every size and organizes security into six functions: Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover.
We measure where you are today against NIST CSF 2.0, set a realistic target and give you a prioritized plan to close the gap. Because HIPAA, PCI DSS, SOC 2 and CMMC overlap heavily with NIST, building on NIST means you do the work once and reuse it across frameworks. For defense contractors, we assess against NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2, the standard CMMC Level 2 uses.

My wife and I own Alta Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Reno. This is a large healthcare facility, approximately 65,000 sq feet with more than 100 employees. The team at Nevada IT solutions has been integral in improving our IT infrastructure. This includes some common IT tasks such as establishing a server, firewall, and user interfaces. However, it also includes assisting with 3rd party vendors in negotiating a fiber connection, wiring the building for more access, bidding out security cameras, and managing a complicated telephone system. I highly recommend them. They have minimized our monthly service fees and up-front capital costs. However, they have also been direct when it comes to explaining why purchasing a higher-end product is produced in the long term. Please feel free to ask if you would like to speak to me directly for a reference and are a large employer.
Compliance is easier when your security tools already produce evidence. These NVITS services support most frameworks:
We support businesses in Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Lake Tahoe, Minden, Fernley and Truckee. Assessments can be done on-site or remotely.
An IT compliance audit compares your systems, policies and records against a specific framework, such as HIPAA, PCI DSS, SOC 2, CMMC or NIST. NVITS reviews access controls, encryption, backups, logging, patching, vendor access and documentation. You then receive a report that ranks each gap by risk, with a plan to fix it.
No. No IT provider can certify you on its own. SOC 2 reports are issued by CPA firms, CMMC Level 2 certifications by authorized C3PAOs, and larger PCI DSS assessments by Qualified Security Assessors. HIPAA has no official certification. NVITS prepares you for those reviews and keeps your controls working afterward.
Yes, in part. On July 13, 2026, the Department of War suspended CMMC Phase II, which would have required third-party assessments. Phase I self-assessment requirements are still in place, and contracts with DFARS 252.204-7012 still require you to protect CUI under NIST SP 800-171. Keep working on your controls so you’re ready when assessments resume.
NIST CSF 2.0 is a voluntary framework any organization can use to build and measure a security program. NIST SP 800-171 is a specific set of 110 security requirements for protecting Controlled Unclassified Information, and it’s the basis for CMMC Level 2. Most Reno businesses start with CSF. Defense contractors that handle CUI need 800-171.
It depends on the framework and how much is already in place. A gap assessment for a small business usually takes a few weeks. Fixing the gaps can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. SOC 2 Type II and CMMC Level 2 take the longest because you need to show your controls work over time.
The cost depends on the framework, how many people and systems are in scope, and how many gaps the assessment finds. We price the work after the gap assessment, so you only pay for what you actually need. Ongoing compliance support can be added to our managed IT plans.
Often, yes. Small businesses are covered by the same rules as large ones. A two-dentist office is still covered by HIPAA, a single retail location that takes cards falls under PCI DSS, and a five-person machine shop that receives CUI is subject to NIST SP 800-171. Insurers and larger customers increasingly ask small vendors for proof of security too.
Yes. Send us the audit findings or the questionnaire. We’ll identify what’s missing, fix the technical gaps, document the evidence and help you respond before your deadline.
Many consultants hand you a report and leave. Our IT and security team implements the controls and keeps them running.
We don't sell certificates. We get you ready for the auditors and assessors who do issue them.
We map controls once and reuse them across HIPAA, PCI DSS, SOC 2, CMMC and NIST.
