HIPAA IT compliance means your practice’s technology protects electronic patient information the way the HIPAA Security Rule requires, and you have the documentation to prove it. NVITS helps Reno and Northern Nevada medical, dental and behavioral health practices run security risk assessments, put the required safeguards in place and keep them working.
We handle the technical side of HIPAA: risk analysis, access controls, MFA, encryption, audit logs, protected backups and staff training. Then we document every safeguard, so you’re ready if HHS, an insurer or a partner asks for proof.
No one can certify your practice as “HIPAA compliant.” HIPAA compliance is ongoing work, and we do that work with you every month.

Most HIPAA problems start with ordinary IT gaps that no one is watching. Here's what they can cost your practice.
HHS's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) keeps penalizing practices that skip the required risk analysis. By mid-2026, its Risk Analysis Initiative had led to 14 enforcement actions.
Ransomware can lock your EHR, scheduling and billing for days. HHS presumes most ransomware attacks on patient data are reportable breaches.
Shared passwords, missing MFA and unencrypted laptops expose patient records and damage the trust your patients place in you.
A reportable breach means notifying patients, HHS and, for larger breaches, the media, along with legal costs and lost patients.
If your safeguards aren't written down, auditors and insurers treat them as if they don't exist.
Every IT, cloud, email and software vendor that touches patient data needs a business associate agreement and the right safeguards.
We run a HIPAA security risk analysis: where ePHI lives, how it moves, the threats to it and how well your current safeguards protect it.
We give you a prioritized remediation plan, then put the safeguards in place, from MFA and encryption to backups and access controls.
We manage and monitor your safeguards every month, update the risk analysis each year and keep your documentation current.
When OCR investigates a breach, the first thing it usually asks for is your most recent security risk analysis. Many small practices don’t have one, or have one from years ago that doesn’t match their current systems. The rules are also tightening. HHS proposed a major update to the HIPAA Security Rule in January 2025 that would make MFA, encryption and a 72-hour system recovery plan required. Practices that build these safeguards now won’t have to scramble later. Nevada law adds its own requirement: NRS 603A.215 requires businesses to encrypt personal information they send electronically outside their secure systems.
We turn HIPAA’s technical requirements into a clear, managed program. We map your ePHI, assess the risks, put the administrative, physical and technical safeguards in place, and document each one. Because we’re also your managed IT and cybersecurity provider, the safeguards don’t sit in a binder. They run every day, and we keep the records that prove it. We’re not a law firm, so we work alongside your compliance officer or attorney on legal questions.

My wife and I own Alta Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Reno. This is a large healthcare facility, approximately 65,000 sq feet with more than 100 employees. The team at Nevada IT solutions has been integral in improving our IT infrastructure. This includes some common IT tasks such as establishing a server, firewall, and user interfaces. However, it also includes assisting with 3rd party vendors in negotiating a fiber connection, wiring the building for more access, bidding out security cameras, and managing a complicated telephone system. I highly recommend them. They have minimized our monthly service fees and up-front capital costs. However, they have also been direct when it comes to explaining why purchasing a higher-end product is produced in the long term. Please feel free to ask if you would like to speak to me directly for a reference and are a large employer.
HIPAA IT compliance means your computers, network, email, software and backups protect electronic patient information (ePHI) the way the HIPAA Security Rule requires. That includes a written risk analysis, access controls, encryption, audit logs, tested backups, staff training and a breach response plan, all documented and kept up to date.
No. HHS doesn’t certify or endorse any HIPAA compliance program, so no company can make your practice “HIPAA certified.” HHS has warned healthcare providers about misleading certification claims. What matters is doing the required safeguards and keeping documented proof that they work.
A security risk analysis is a written review of where your practice stores and sends ePHI, the threats to it and how well your safeguards protect it. HIPAA requires one, and you should update it at least once a year and after big changes, like a new EHR, office or cloud system. Missing or outdated risk analyses are the most common finding in OCR enforcement.
The Security Rule requires administrative, physical and technical safeguards. On the IT side, that means unique logins and access controls, automatic logoff, audit logs, integrity controls, secure transmission, data backups and a disaster recovery plan. Encryption and MFA are expected best practices, and the proposed Security Rule update would make them required.
HHS proposed a major Security Rule update in January 2025. It would require MFA, encryption of ePHI, a technology asset inventory and network map, written plans to restore key systems within 72 hours, and yearly compliance audits. The federal regulatory agenda lists the final rule for July 2027, but that date isn’t binding and could change.
Usually, yes. HHS says that when ransomware encrypts ePHI, a breach is presumed to have occurred unless your practice can show a low probability that the information was compromised, based on a documented risk assessment. That’s why tested backups, logging and a written incident response plan matter so much.
Yes, if your IT provider can access, store or manage ePHI, it’s a business associate under HIPAA, and you need a signed business associate agreement (BAA). The same applies to cloud, email, backup and software vendors that handle patient data. We help you track which vendors need a BAA.
NVITS managed IT plans with HIPAA-focused security start at $55 per user per month. A standalone HIPAA security risk assessment is quoted after a short call, based on your number of locations, users and systems. Fixing gaps found in the assessment is quoted separately, so you know the cost before any work starts.
We're based in Northern Nevada, with on-site help typically within 1–2 hours in the Reno area. We know the practices we protect.
As your managed IT provider, we don't just recommend safeguards. We run them, monitor them and fix problems before they become breaches.
Your risk analysis, policies, training records, backup tests and access reviews are kept current and organized in one place.
We don't sell fake "HIPAA certifications." We give you real safeguards, clear documentation and straight answers.
We already build in MFA, encryption, asset inventories and tested recovery plans, the safeguards the proposed Security Rule update would require.
Managed IT plans with HIPAA-focused security start at $55 per user per month. Risk assessments are quoted up front, with no surprise fees.
Find out where your practice stands. Book a HIPAA security risk assessment, and we'll map your patient data, test your safeguards and give you a written, prioritized plan to close the gaps. Looking for everyday IT support for your practice? See our IT support for healthcare providers.
